Vive announces new VR headset

Virtual reality is potentially taking a huge leap forward with the announcement of HTC Vive’s latest product.

The as-of-yet unnamed VR headset, announced yesterday at Google’s I/O developer conference, is one of the first standalone headsets for the Daydream platform. The unique hook? No smartphone or PC required for entry.

And that’s about it as far as what we know of the new headset. The company promises that it’ll be easy to set up and use, while providing "a deeper and more immersive portable VR experience than ever before", and says that it’ll be available before the end of the year.

It looks likely that the new device will be something of a gateway between the simplistic Google Cardboard/Gear VR smartphone headsets out there and the high-end, premium HMDs such as the Vive, PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift. Pricing should follow suit and be between £200-300.
