The window for users to upgrade to Windows 10 for free has slammed shut but there is a way to nab a free update.
If anybody missed it, Windows 8 users have spent the past year being pestered by popups telling them to upgrade to Windows 10 before the July 29th cutoff date. Eagle eyed observers however have noticed that the Microsoft is still offering the free upgrade to consumers who use assistive technology.
The move should be seen as a positive one as Microsoft looks to further improve Windows 10’s accesibility features – such as screen reading and upgraded experiences when using Microsoft’s native software like Edge and Mail – in the recently released anniversary update.
Microsoft isn’t restricting the offer to specific technologies, and – more pertinent to most users – isn’t verifying that you’re using them either. What that means is that in order to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, all users need to do is pretend that they’re using assistive technology.
This might all come as a relief to users who missed the boat on their free upgrade but they’ll have to park their morals at the door.
