Microsoft’s tech evangelist ‘Bruce Harris’ has revealed some details about the HoloLens’ field of view.

Harris stated that it would be ‘rather similar to a person standing two feet away from a 15-inch monitor’ at an event in Tel Aviv.

He explained that the reason behind a limited view was to reduce the cost and increase the battery life of the headset.

As manufacturing improves, Microsoft plans to adjust the field of view in accordance with the price.

Any universal Windows 10 application will be supported natively on the headset, which can run up to 5.5 hours on a single charge under normal usage. Harris explained that despite this, the battery life could be reduced to 2.5 hours under heavy use.

He also revealed that the HoloLens will be ‘totally wireless’ and can connect to anything, even in a separate room.

The HoloLens Development Edition will be available sometime in Q1 2016 with a $3,000 price tag. Pricing and availability for the consumer version has not be revealed yet.

Microsoft might want to hurry up if it is to compete with other VR headsets in the consumer space. Oculus has now revealed pricing and pre-orders for its Rift headset. The firm has not yet revealed its plans to work with UK channel partners, but says it will eventually.
