Samsung has stopped production of its flagship Galaxy Note 7. The news comes shortly after reports emerged that the company would ‘temporarily’ halt production of the device.
The company had issued a global recall for the exploding phones, but has been forced to cease production after it was reported that replacement handsets suffered the same issues.
Samsung released an official statement in response to the mass speculation: “We are working with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note 7. Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place.
“We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation. Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down, stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available.”
In the wake of this news, UK retailers like Vodafone were quick to pull the handset off their shelves yesterday, joining a string of US retailers including the likes of T-Mobile and Verizon.
Concerns over the stability of the phone has also prompted Oculus and Samsung to make the Gear VR headset no longer compatible.
If consumers attempt to use the headset with the Galaxy Note 7, the following message is shown: “Customer safety is Oculus’ top priority. Oculus is removing support for all Note 7 devices on the Oculus platform. Until further notice, Note 7 devices will not be compatible with the Gear VR. For more information regarding the Note 7, please contact Samsung directly."
