Microsoft claiming ten per cent of the hard-disk MP3 market

Zune hits a million

Microsoft’s president of entertainment and devices Robbie Bach has claimed that his company’s MP3 contender Zune has already reached the one million sales mark – a month earlier that its end of June target date.

Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Bach stated: "We’re very pleased with the progress. In the hard-disk-based category we’ve got about 10 percent market share. It’s a good start. It’s not an overwhelming start. I’m not going to pretend it’s some gigantic move.”

Microsoft will be happy by the fact that Zune seems to have got off to a faster start than Apple’s iPod, which itself took 14 months to reach a million sales. However, Earthtimes.org reports that in the same period Apple has sold around 25 million iPods, demonstrating the tough market Microsoft is hoping to break.

The iPod itself reached the 100 million sales barrier earlier this month, and has sold around 10.5 million machines in the first quarter of 2007.
