Video streaming kingpin YouTube has announced that over one billion of its videos are watched within a 24-hour period.

YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley announced the landmark moment on the website’s blog.

“Three years ago today… we’d just made headlines by joining with Google in our shared goal of organising the world’s information (in our case video) and making it easily and quickly accessible to anyone, anywhere,” he said.

“Today, I'm proud to say that we have been serving well over a billion views a day on YouTube. This is great moment in our short history and we owe it all to you.”

To celebrate, the website’s home page has replaced the ubiquitous YouTube logo with the announcement of “one billion views per day”, though it is believed that YouTube had achieved the milestone months ago.

Search engine giant Google purchased YouTube in November 2006 for $1.6 billion.
