The Xbox One has finally outsold the PS4 after moving 1.2 million units in November alone.

The PlayStation 4 has held the top spot in console sales since the two competing devices went on sale earlier in the year, and although it looked like it was going to stay this way, Microsoft eventually prevailed.

Combined sales of the PS4 and Xbox One are now around 80 per cent higher than sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360, after 13 months on the market.

The surge in sales comes a month after Microsoft announced hitting 10 million units sold, and dropping its price by $50 to encourage gamers to come over from Sony.

Nintendo stayed well out of things, but did announce that it had sold around 710,000 copies of its smash hit, Super Smash Bros for Wii U. It also revealed that its AmiiBo real-world toys, which allow players to use figurines while gaming, were rather popular.

Liam Callahan, analyst from the NPD Group, commented: “Overall retail sales across hardware, software, and accessories declined 11 per cent this November versus November 2013 in the US.

“For the most part throughout 2014, we have seen software declines that were offset by year-over-year increases in hardware spending. This November, however, hardware declines totaled $294 million while software declined $17 million or two per cent. Accessory sales increased by a modest $5 million.”
