Massively popular online game World of Warcraft has gone free-to-play for the first 20 levels of a player’s character.
The Activision Blizzard game has skirted with a number of promotional mechanisms in the past including ‘resurrection’ trials of lapsed MMO-players and open free 10 to 14-day trials but the new World of Warcraft Starter Edition removes any time restriction.
That said, with the maximum level currently pegged at 85, level 1 to 20 represents a small slice of the total game world, particularly since most of the content is aimed at the so-called ‘end game’, or players that have already reached level 85.
Despite the seven-year-old game showing its age, World of Warcraft continues to be massively successful with the last Catalysm expansion selling 4.7 million copies. The game has collectively more than 11 million subscribers worldwide.
Gamers enticed to progress in the aging MMO after level 20 will need to buy the World of Warcraft ‘Battle Chest’ for $19.99 or £19.99 and of course an ongoing subscription.
