Chairman Simon Lin seeks to reassure industry after concerns raised by AMD

Wistron: ‘Netbooks no threat to laptops’

Wistron chairman Simon Lin has spoken out about recent fears expressed in the industry over concerns that netbooks may be cannibalising notebook sales.

"Acer and Asustek Computer might have over estimated the potential of the netbook market as margins from netbook production are still lower than traditional notebooks," Lin told Digitimes. "Netbooks are still uncompetitive in terms of their smaller keyboards and panels, and are therefore still a niche device."

Lin went on to say that his firm had no intentions of rushing into the netbook market full-on, saying that current estimates put its figures at two million units in 2009.
