Wikipedia outage caused by cut server cables

No suggestion of foul play, says spokesperson

An outage on the hugely popular Wikipedia site yesterday was caused by severed fibre optic cables at its data centre in Florida.

The website was inaccessible for around two hours yesterday afternoon - an hour down, and an hour to fix the problem - but was back online by about 4pm UK time.

A Wikipedia spokesman said that while two overland cables had been cut between Tampa and Virginia, there was no suggestion of foul play.
