Western Digital has reported a 61.7 per cent year-on-year rise in hard drive shipments for its third fiscal quarter.

In the three months up to 2 April, the firm shipped 51.1 million hard drive units, compared to 31.6 million in the same period last year. Revenue, meanwhile, stood at $2.6 billion – a 62.5 per cent rise from $1.6 billion in fiscal Q3 2009.

Net income came in at $400 million, a 700 per cent increase on $50 million for the same three months last year.

John Coyne, president and chief executive officer, said: "With market demand stronger than anticipated in the March quarter, our large-scale vertical integration, agile business model and product breadth allowed us to respond to this upside opportunity and again grow our share of the overall hard drive market.

"We believe that 2010 will continue to be a strong year for digital storage. We will maintain our focus on facilitating our customers' growth and making them successful while at the same time achieving sustained profitability for WD."
