An in-depth round up of 7,200rpm notebook drives by the Tech Report awarded the WD Scorpio Black the Editor's Choice award.

The 11-page Tech Report round up said the Western Digital 500GB Scorpio Black “is best described as an all-rounder.” Failing to win every performance test, Tech Report nevertheless said that the delay in releasing a half terabyte Scorpio black was “time well spent.”

Across a range of tests such as sequential throughput, real-world file transfers, random access times and multitasking performance, Tech Report said that the WD Scorpio Black was “always competitive” and achieved the highest performance index “by a decent margin.”

The Tech Report also said that impressive noise levels and power consumption also played a role in attaining the top spot but “two more years of warranty coverage than the competition and a $70 asking price that makes the Scorpio the cheapest option of the lot, and you have a definitive Editor’s Choice.”

The round up also found the 750GB on offer from the Seagate Momentus 750GB drive attractive and said that drives from Samsung and Hitachi Global Storage also offered “decent performance in a wide range of tests” but this wasn’t enough to set the drives apart from WD’s Scorpio Black.
