Virtualisation specialist VMware is to cut 900 jobs in an effort to streamline its operations.
The jobs cuts, revealed as part of VMware’s earnings release for 2012, will come in areas such as SlideRocket, the firm’s online presentation software.
These cuts come after the addition of around 6,700 people to the company over the past three years.
In its earnings release, VMware reported on-target Q4 earnings, with a full year revenue forecast of $5.32-$5.35 billion – lower than estimates of $5.42 billion.
Chief executive Pat Gelsinger said the firm will streamline and eliminate jobs from low-priority areas in order to focus on more popular products: "As we enter Q1 [of 2013], we are actively focusing our investments and resource to capitalise on these opportunities. And by definition, there are areas we plan to de-emphasise across the business to do this.
"One thing I’ve learned over the years is the importance of prioritisation and execution. So, I have been working with my leadership team to ensure we have the right level of resources in the proper places for 2013 and beyond."
The company still expects to hire throughout 2013, and intends to increase its workforce by 1,000 by the end of the year.
