Virgin Media launches wearable band KipstR

The band is 3D printed and senses the wearer’s pulse rate

Virgin Media has launched the KipstR; a wearable band that controls a television while the user sleeps.

The firm and two students, Ryan Oliver and Jonathan Kingsley from Manchester Creative Studio, teamed up as part of Virgin Media’s Switched on Futures initiative to create the band.

The 3D printed wristband uses a pulse-oximeter to sense if the wearer is asleep or awake, and then mimics the users’ TiVo remote to record, pause or stop programmes.

Neil Illingworth, head of advanced technology and innovation at Virgin Media, said: “We have been exploring the possibilities of connected entertainment for some time and are very excited to unveil KipstR.

“With emerging new technologies, it is possible to create almost anything, such as emotionally intelligent entertainment systems that can suggest shows based on your moods, or even harnessing brainwaves to control your television.”

Virgin Media is trialling the KipstR, with customers able to register for the new device now.
