A job posting for a electrical engineer and a visit from Apple chief Tim Cook, set tongues wagging about just what’s cooking at PC gaming legends Valve Software.
Valve posted a number of job offerings including electronics and mechanical hardware engineers.
"For years, Valve has been all about writing software that provides great gameplay experiences. Now we’re developing hardware to enhance those experiences," Valve said in the job post.
The successful applicant will be working to "conceive, design, evaluate, and produce new types of input, output, and platform hardware," the post continued.
The posts coincided with Cultofmac report that Apple chief Tim Cook was spotted at Valve headquarters in Washington. Cultofmac instructed readers and Mac fans to "think of Valve as the iTunes of PC gaming." Bless.
Speculation arose that Valve could be in the frame to deliver gaming capabilities to an upcoming Apple-branded hardware device – quite possible the long discussed Apple television set.
Others speculated that the two were working on Valve-designed hardware, something that had already been the subject of speculation prior to the job postings and alleged Tim Cook visit.
Much of this has the distinct whiff of unlikely about it. Now of course one reason Cook might have been at Valve HQ is to make an offer to buy the company outright. Apple are sitting on mountains of cash and Valve is still a privately held company.
Wouldn’t that be something?
