PC sales in the UK fell less than expected during the second quarter, according to the latest figures from IDC.
Total UK PC sales were down by 7.2 per cent during the period, to 2.5 million units. However, it was less than the 12.1 per cent that had been predicted by the analyst earlier in the year.
While the market fared better than expected, HP was battered during the quarter, seeing its sales fall three times the market average. Combined with Dell’s fall of 7.3 per cent and Acer’s growth of 36.7 per cent, it means HP has been knocked off the top spot in the UK.
Desktop sales at HP fell by 19.9 per cent, while laptop sales were down by 29.9 per cent. IDC suggested that the vendor’s poor performance was down to its failure to emphasise its netbook range.
"HP was not consciously pushing mini notebooks and this is costing them market share," commented IDC research manager, Ezster Morvay.
Consumer portables sales continued to dominate the market, with both Dell and Acer benefiting from retail sales. Dell grew by 86.2 per cent, while Acer saw its sales increase by 66.4 per cent during the quarter. In contrast, HP sales slipped by 14.6 per cent.
Netbooks accounted for one-third of the portables sector, according to IDC.
