The Metropolitan Police are monitoring around 1,000 individuals that have registered fake London 2012 Olympics web sites.
According to a ComputerWeekly report, the Met’s London 2012 financial crime unit boss detective chief inspector Nick Downing described the upcoming olympics as an "extremely hostile environment."
Downing said that Operation Podium was monitoring fake ticket other fraudulent web sites in order to understand the criminal activity and to take action. Some web sites have already been taken down, he said.
The UK is a world-leader in ticket fraud sites, Downing said, adding that "British organised ticketing networks are the main ones out there at the moment."
The British non-profit domain registrar Nominent currently has no mandate to suspend domains suspected of hosting illegal activity. At the Met’s serious and organised crime unit’s request, Nominet has a consultation underway to decide on a new policy, potentially allowing the ‘takedown’ of websites.
The Met is clearly hoping such a policy can be put in place so they can act against faudulent web sites looking to capitalise on the upcoming Olympics.
