UK Government embraces technology 'arms race'

Senior policy advisor says that Tech City will be at the forefront of UK tech innovation

A Government advisor has told delegates at the LeWeb conference that the UK welcomes the opportunity to compete in a tech ‘arms race’.

According to Tech Week Europe, senior policy advisor Rohan Silva stated that David Cameron was proud of the developments in East London’s ‘Tech City’ and that the Government is keen to make the UK the leader in various technology sectors.

“That kind of arms race is really healthy. If any of you have any stories of countries we should be playing catch up with, we want to hear that,” said Silva during the opening session of the conference.

“London is full of energy, it is full of ideas… the prime minister is so proud this is happening right now. Something really special is happening in east London. It is not some kind of arid business park in the middle of nowhere… it is an incredible place to live and work.

“We are trying to do the right thing as a government with transport, infrastructure, tax policies. It is the place in Europe to go.”

However, celebrity TV chef Jamie Oliver warned that the UK had a long way to go before the UK could compete with the likes of Silicon Valley. Apparently he’s unaware of the 50-year head start…
