Toshiba has filed lawsuits against no fewer than 17 companies this week for DVD-related patent infringements, according to Canada.com.
The vendor went to the US International Trade Commission, which is responsible for verifying copyright and patent infringements, and filed the same complaint against all 17 companies for selling DVD based products without proper permission. The move is partly down to the recent emergence of much cheaper DVD players.
Most of the companies in question are from China and Hong Kong, but the complaint was filed in the US in an attempt to get an injunction put in place which would not allow the disputed products to be imported and sold.
Dawoo Electronics America, Dongguan, GVG Digital Technology and Star Light Electronics are some of the more renown firms in question. Cheap DVD players are part of the problems. On top of the injunction on imports, Toshiba is demanding that the companies also pay for damages.
"The infringement of Toshiba’s patents by these companies has damaged Toshiba’s DVD-related business, and also caused damage to the legitimate and licensed DVD product manufacturing and distribution and business as a whole," said Toshiba in a statement.
