The floods in Thailand have released in a shortfall of PC ships of almost four million according to a new report from IHS iSuppli.
Hard drive shortages are the main culprit, they say, noting that it will also contribute to a reduced outlook for global PC sales next year. IHS said yearly growth would now be 6.8 per cent in 2012, down from the earlier 9.5 per cent prior to the floods.
"The PC supply chain says it has sufficient HDD inventory for the fourth quarter of 2011. However, those stockpiles will run out in the first quarter of 2012," said IHS analyst Matthew Wilkins.
The supply chain analysts would only be able to meet demand by the end of the third quarter 2012. They said this could even result in an inventory surplus by the end of the year.
