Tesco has announced a new device in its tablet range, the Hudl2, which comes with an improved processor and an 8.3-inch full HD screen - but it has scrapped the Hudl smartphone.

Like the retailer’s first tablet, the Hudl, the new tablet also has a low price tag, costing just £129.

The Hudl2 will be available in eight different colours and will go on sale on October 9th, although consumers will be able to pre-order it from October 8th.

Hudle2 specs include:
- 8.3-inch Full HD touchscreen
- 1.83GHz Intel Atom quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM
- Android 4.4 KitKat
- 5MP rear camera
- 1MP front camera
- 16BG storage (plus microSD)
- Eight hours battery life
- Available in black, blue, purple, red, aqua, pink, orange and white

Tesco’s Group Digital Officer Michael Comish told TrustedReviews why the supermarket decided not to launch a Hudl smartphone alongside the new tablet: "We just saw the bottom end of the smartphone market dry up," he said.

"The Chinese manufacturers, they have pretty much got it covered. So, we were able to say, our customers are being served and that’s not a place we want to compete. So let’s double down on the Hudl."

Tesco’s first tablet, the Hudl, has sold more than 750,000 units since its launch on September 30th, 2013.

In August, PCR reported on a bug found on the Hudl tablet that leaves its data vulnerable to recovery, even after a factory reset.
