Supermarket enjoys tech success but like-for-like sales dip overall

Tesco Hudl tablet and Blinkbox sales soar over Christmas

Tesco has sold almost half a million units of its Hudl tablet computer – over 400,000 – since the device went on sale in late September 2013.

In early December the supermarket announced it had sold 300,000 Hudl units, meaning at least an additional 100,000 flew off the shelves over the Christmas period.

Tesco’s video-on-demand service and Netflix rival Blinkbox also had record sales over Christmas, with sales rising 245 per cent.

In fact, New Year’s Day 2014 was the biggest day ever for Blinkbox with sales up by 266 per cent year-on-year.

The news comes after Tesco promoted Blinkbox founder Michael Cornish to its group digital chief last year.

Tesco announced the sales figures as part of its Christmas and New Year Trading Statement, which revealed that group sales in the six weeks to January 4th 2014 declined by 1.6 per cent.

But Tesco’s website had a record Christmas, over three million online grocery orders (up 11 per cent).

"More customers than ever experienced Tesco across more than one channel this Christmas," said Tesco in a statement.

"Over three million online grocery delivery orders were placed within the six weeks covered by this statement, with one third of all orders placed on a mobile device. We saw a marked increase in the number of gifts bought online via Tesco Direct, including of course, our Hudl tablet, which continued to prove very popular."
