Sony has announced that its SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1 wearable glasses are available for pre-orders today in the UK and Germany.

The transparent lens eyewear connects with compatible smartphones, projecting information onto the user's eye line, using holographic waveguide technology.

It will be available to buy from March 2015 across ten countries, priced at £520 (excluding taxes), with the official version of the device’s SDK available for developers now.

A monochrome display is used to ensure low energy consumption and high luminance. A binocular display is also used so text and info can be seen under a wide range of lighting conditions.

The smartglasses have a range of sensor technologies built in, including CMOS image sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, electric compass, brightness sensor and a microphone.

Apps for the wearable device will be available to download from Google Play.

Sony commented on a blog post: “We are now working to help build a rich portfolio of apps compatible with the SmartEyeglass, so that users across the world can benefit from the convenience in accessing on-demand information in both consumer and professional use cases.”

The SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1 will be available for sale to developers through developer.sonymobile.com.
