Sony has announced that its mobile handset division will lay off 15 per cent of its workforce.

Approximately 1,000 jobs will be cut as Sony Mobile moves its headquarters from Lund, Sweden to Tokyo, Japan in October.

Sony Mobile has noted that its Lund operation will not close down altogether and will continue to be and important strategic site for the company. The main focus of the Lund site will turn to software and application development.

The job cuts are expected to take place at the end of March 2014 and will include 650 on-site staffers and up to 450 consultants.

Sony has stated that the job cuts are being made in an attempt to “increase operational efficiency, reduce costs and drive profitable growth.”
