Sony has unveiled the new ultra-mobile Vaio Z series incorporating a new media dock with external graphics card.

The 13.1-inch Vaio Z weighs less than 1.2kg and is just 16.6mm thick but it's the firm's Power Media Dock that really sets the ultra-portable apart.

Based on Intel's high-speed IO technology 'Light Peak', the Power Media Dock adds AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics wutg 1GB of RAM, DVD optical drive and extra HDMI and VGA video output ports. The dock also adds USB ports and can be specced with a Blu-ray drive.

The super-slim Vaio Z also contains a 'sheet' lithium polymer battery good for driving the Intel Core i7-2620M-powered notebook for 7 hours while a second optional sheet battery can be attached to the bottom of the device, charged separately from the PC, able to power the Vaio Z for up to 14 hours.

The high-end Vaio Z is a pricey beast and only comes with SSD drives as standard. The entry level model costs £1,434 for a 2.30GHz Intel i5-2410M CPU, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD and no funky power dock.

A higher spec model with an Intel Core i7-2620M 2.70GHz, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, higher res 1920 x 1080 screen, extra battery and the Blu-ray equipped Power Media Dock will set you back a cool £2,683.99 and that's by no means the top spec model.

Footballers wishing to order a shiny new Vaio Z from the Sony UK store may be disappointed to learn they will not ship for a few weeks yet.
