Sony has announced yet another memory format called the SxS PROTM. According to the press release the format will be aimed at professional videographers.

Initially, Sony plan to launch an 8GB (SBP-8) and 16GB (SBP-16) models. The new format is compliant with the Express card industry standards.

Sony plan to adopt the high-speed cards in its XDCAM EX series of camcorders, which will appear late this year. The cards will have much lower transfer times than current memory formats with speeds of up to 800 Mbps when used with a high end PC.

Despite the cards being much smaller than conventional designs, the 16 GB SxS PROcard is capable of recording approximately one hour when used with Sony’s new XDCAM EX camcorder.

The new cards will be available in November, priced at about $500 for the 8 GB3 SBP-8 model and about $900 for the 16 GB3 SBP-16 model.
