Sony Ericsson is rumoured to be working on a gaming phone which will carry PlayStation branding.
The Engadget report suggests that Sony Ericsson is in the final stages of development of a PlayStation branded phone to appear within the firm's Xperia range of smartphones and that the phone will run the forthcoming Android 3.0 "Gingerbread" operating system.
Beyond the phone itself, Engaged claims to have knowledge that a new gaming section would appear within the Android marketplace and that compatibility would be limited initially to the PlayStation phone but later other high end devices, presumably carrying similar graphics hardware, will also gain access in time.
The Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone is suggested to have fairly standard features such as a1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, however it will also reportedly feature a slider mechanism similar to the PSP Go, where gaming controls will feature instead of a keyboard.
Engadget adds that the phone would have PlayStation-like shoulder buttons and might be available as early as October.
If there's any truth to the development then Google's recent spate of acquisitions in the casual gaming area may have more ramifications than a speculated entry into social networking.
