Skype today launches a new version of its VoIP software closely integrated with Facebook, signalling an important new alliance between two of the most influential web entities.
Facebook news feeds and phonebooks can now be made to appear in the Skype window, and users can also update their status, comment and like directly from the VoIP programme should they wish.
There have been claims a head-to-head battle between the two internet behemoths could be on the cards, a conflict this move makes look unlikely.
The new version of Skype also allows group video calling, and has a cleaner interface with enhanced search options.
Skype asserts its users spend an average of 520 million minutes a day on its service, which is no small claim. Meanwhile Facebook says its 500 million active users spend over 700 billion minutes per month on its site – meaning these two together represent a fair chunk of the internet's overall usage.
