Berlin-based developer Skobbler has released its free navigation tool onto the Google Android platform, following the success of its iPhone app.

The firm claims to have had over 82,000 downloads since the UK launch of Skobbler for iPhone four weeks ago, pushing it to the top of the UK free navigation app chart and into the UK’s top ten most popular free apps overall.

Featuring a new user interface, the new Android version is compatible with most smartphones running Google’s operating system.

Users can update the maps for free, thanks to Skobbler’s alliance with OpenStreetMap.

“Developing skobbler for the Android platform was the next logical step for the company,” says Marcus Thielking, co-founder of Skobbler. “Our goal is to show that the revolutionary OpenStreetMap (OSM) concept can already support great location-based services, even in the most complex category which is definitely car navigation.”
