Hard drive maker Seagate has announced the GoFlex Satellite, an external hard-drive based storage solution with a built-in battery and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Seagate GoFlex Satellite aims to extend the storage capacity of any Wi-Fi enabled mobile device via an app for iOS devices or a web page for other devices. Seagate said that the growth of tablets created a market for solutions which avoided internet streaming of media.

"The unfortunate fact is that these popular new mobile devices are hampered by their limited storage capacity while one of their primary functions is that of media consumption," said Seagate retail boss Patrick Connolly.

Connolly said the external storage also meant that users of lower capacity tablets would not "feel as though it is a compromise" to own a lower capacity tablet.

"With GoFlex Satellite, people will be able to carry their entire media library with them without the need for wires or the web at a fraction of the cost of adding 3G or purchasing the 64GB iPad," he added.

The Seagate GoFlex Satellite with a 500GB drive is set to go on sale for $199 n the US, no European pricing was announced.
