Experts are warning that a ‘solar storm’ of electromagnetic particles capable of affecting technology is on its way to Earth.
The storm is theoretically capable of interfering with global power networks, GPS devices, unshielded digital networks and aircraft.
According to the BBC, the storm is the strongest in five years and was triggered by a pair of large solar flares earlier this month. These in turn have been triggered by a rise in solar activity, which conforms to an 11-year cycle that is due to peak next year.
Although solar flares and storms have been observable phenomena for centuries, it is only recently that humanity has developed technology that can be affected by stellar events, with similar occurrences happening in Illinois in 1972, and Quebec in 1989.
