It notifies users of incoming messages, such as calls, texts and emails

Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch officially revealed, out this month

Samsung has shown off its Galaxy Gear smartwatch device at IFA 2013 in Berlin, which is designed to let users stay connected to other Samsung Galaxy devices.

The product – out on September 25th in over 140 countries including the UK – will be available in six colours at launch: Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green. It will launch at the same time as the Galaxy Note 3.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear notifies users of incoming messages, such as calls, texts, emails and alerts, delivers a preview of those messages. Consumers can pick up their other Samsung Galaxy device and a ‘Smart Relay’ feature will reveal the full content on-screen.

A built-in speaker lets users conduct hands-free calls, for example by speaking into the Galaxy Gear without touching the screen. Users can also draft messages, create new calendar entries, set alarms and check the weather on the Galaxy Gear. They can control music on their other Galaxy device using the smartwatch, too.

Of course, the Galaxy Gear also serves as a wristwatch; it comes pre-loaded with 10 different clock options and more will be downloadable via Samsung Apps.

It features a 1.9 Megapixel camera, too, and can capture voice memos which can be transferred to Samsung Galaxy devices.

Auto Lock automatically secures the companion smartphone screen any time the Galaxy Gear is more than 1.5 metres away from the smartphone, as a security feature, then unlocks it when the devices are near each other again.

‘Find My Device’ helps users find the location of their smart devices when they have been misplaced by making them beep, illuminate and vibrate, while the Galaxy Gear also works like a Pedometer to track physical activity, tracking calories burned, steps taken and distance covered.

Samsung says the upcoming smartwatch "conjures images of luxury jewellery while still being understated enough to go well with any outfit".

“Samsung’s ongoing smart device innovation leadership reflects our commitment to listen to our consumers who want their daily lives to be easier and more enjoyable," said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics.

"Samsung Galaxy Gear benefits consumers by integrating smart device technology even deeper into their everyday lives, and bridges the gap between the mobile device and fashion worlds to create truly wearable technology."
