Apple has announced that more than 1 million copies of Safari for Windows were downloaded in the first 48 hours since the free public beta was made available on Monday.

Apple claims Safari 3 is the fastest browser running on Windows, rendering web pages up to twice as fast as IE 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2, based on the industry standard iBench tests.

However, several serious security holes, such as these reported on The Register, were reported almost immediately. These appear to affect only Windows users.

To its credit, Apple has swiftly released the first patch, which addresses these issues. The Safari beta, now version 3.0.1, can be downloaded here.
