BlackBerry maker RIM announced the recall of around 1,000 of the new firm's new Playbook tablet following an OS flaw.

The company said that the faulty tablets were shipped with a specific build of the QNX operating system which could result in the tablets being unable to load software. Most of the device wered in the distribution channel and had yet to be sold to customers, they said.

"In the small number of cases where a customer received a PlayBook that is unable to properly load software upon initial set-up, they can contact RIM for assistance," RIM said in an announcement.

The markets responded poorly to the move with RIM shares reaching a two-year low, having shed a quarter of their value this year alone.
