RIM stock jumps ten per cent

RIM adds 15k BlackBerry 10 apps in lead up to new OS

Developers submitted 15,000 BlackBerry 10 apps within two days during RIM’s virtual Community Port-a-Thon event.

With BlackBerry 10 experts on hand to help, developers were rewarded with $100 for each eligible app approved for the new operating system.

Those who successfully put forward between five and ten apps received a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device.

Meanwhile, the first ten developers to submit ten approved apps were rewarded with a paid trip to BlackBerry Jam Europe, which will be held in Amsterdam in February.

The ‘porting party’ ended after 37.5 hours with BlackBerry Development Head Alec Saunders tweeting: “Well there you have it. 37.5 hours in, we hit 15,000 apps for this portathon. Feel like I’ve run a marathon. Thanks to all the devs!”

After the event, it was revealed that RIM’s stock jumped more than ten per cent, briefly passing $15 a share for the first time since February 2012.

The long-awaited launch of the BlackBerry 10 operating system, as well as a range of new handsets, will take place on Jan 30th.
