Privacy concerns to hinder smartglasses sales

New research finds consumers and government bodies have concerns over privacy and safety issues with smartglasses.

As well as privacy concerns, Juniper Research has also found that a combination of lengthy time-to-market and lack of consumer use has resulted in low levels of shipments and adoption.

According to the report, smartglasses development is at a comparable stage to smartphones in the early 2000s, primarily focused on the enterprise.

“As workplaces are likely to share devices between users, rather than purchase devices in bulk for all their employees, this will result in high investment but low shipment volumes to the enterprise for the next five years,” reads the report.

The report also suggests that Android will remain the dominant smartglasses operating system with Tizen coming into the space in 2015 thanks to Samsung’s Gear Blink.

Juniper estimates that there will be less than 10 million smartglasses shipped by 2017.

Sony is set to launch its Smart EyeGlass device in March 2015, which features a 3MP camera, face recognition and an array of sensors including accelerometer, gyroscope, electronic compass and ambient light sensor.
