Kingston reckons prices will drop ten per cent again in the next quarter

Prices of PC DRAM chips set to fall further

Prices of PC DRAM chips are expected to fall by five per cent globally in the next quarter – slower than this quarter’s 10 per cent decline, says analyst TrendForce Corp.

The dip is partly due to vendors focusing more on mobile DRAM, with the next iPhone said to feature a low-power DDR4 chip with 2GB of memory, reckons the analyst.

“We believe that seasonal demand in the third quarter will still lead to an uptick, which will help ease the severe oversupply of the first half,” TrendForce analyst Avril Wu said. “The recovery would give some support to PC DRAM prices in the third quarter.”

However, vendor Kingston (which produces the HyperX brand, pictured) has said that prices might dip another ten per cent next quarter, reports Taipei Times, as it expects demand for Windows 10 and new Skylake laptops to only rise gradually.

Demand for mobile DRAM chips is set to boost overall DRAM chip prices slightly to $1.47 per unit in the next quarter, up from an estimate of $1.4 this quarter, with supply ‘largely’ in line with demand, said TrendForce.
