Price drop hints at 1GB DDR2 chips becoming standard

The price of 1GB DDR2 chips has dropped below the $2 mark for the first time, prompting DRAM manufacturers to suggest that they might overtake 512MB DDR2 chips as the industry standard during the second quarter of 2008.

The effect of such a move would like be that new computers would come with 2GB as standard as manufacturers move from using two 512MB DDR2 sticks, to using two 1GB DDR2 sticks.

Manufacturers have also indicated that they are beginning to focus on 70nm production of 1GB DDR2 chips in preparation for the change.
