US multinational Intel’s much-anticipated Classmate laptops will be manufactured in a new Portuguese facility.
In a partnership with Portuguese vendor JP Sa Couto, Intel will be building the new factory in the town of Matosinhos. It will fulfil all current and future orders for the Classmate technology.
The laptops are to be manufactured under the brand name of Magellan and will be low-cost items of hardware, targeted at children aged six to ten.
The factory is expected to produce four million laptops for the domestic and international markets according to the Portuguese press.
Intel chairman, Craig Barrett is to announce the partnership in Lisbon’s Atlantic Pavilion during a ceremony that will be attended by Portuguese PM Jose Socrates as well as several government ministers.
