Wisbech magistrates’ court heard evidence that two men had monitored Facebook accounts in order to decide when to rob a home in the town.
The Telegraph reported that one of the convicted men, 20 year old Peter Trower, new the burglary victim’s daughter but with his relationship breaking down with the family he planned revenge aided by 18 year old Joseph McLennan.
Having learned that the family was going away on holiday, the pair invaded the property and set about stealing computers and other valuables only to be seen by a vigilant neigbour leading to their arrest and subsequent conviction.
“I would urge the public to be cautious when using social media, ensuring you know who has access to your personal information and take full advantage of the privacy settings available," said Det Inspector Ian Tandy, from Cambridgeshire police.
Earlier in the week news broke of a New Hampshire based crime ring which had also used Facebook in order to target vacant homes for robbery.
