Pioneer hammers down Blu-ray prices

The firm is launching two new budget Blu-ray disk drive aimed at consumer and OEM users.

Pioneer is driving down the price of Blu-ray players with new models retailing for around £170.

The firm will be producing two versions of the drive, one for computer manufacturers – BDC-202 – and the other for consumers – the BDC-S02 – both of which will come in black or beige, reported The Register.

Like the OEM product, the consumer-oriented drive can read single and dual-layer BD, BD-R and BD-R media, along with all the other optical media avaialble, including DVD R/RW, CD-R/RW and Video CD. However, the drive will only write DVD and CD media, at up to 24x.

Both models are due to become available to buy in the US at the end of May and in the UK in June.
