26 per cent of mobile apps downloaded in 2010 were only used once, a study has revealed.

The Localytics research compiled app usage data across Android, iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 platforms.

Currently, there are about 400,000 iPhone and iPad apps with Android boasting half that number at 200,000.

The research also reveals that one-time usage of apps has increased steadily each quarter. In Q1 it was 22 per cent, growing to 28 per cent before the end of the year.

The Localytics report said: “publishers need to understand who their loyal users are and how to continue growing a loyal user base.”

Localytics did not reveal how pricing effects app usage, but the study seems to indicate that downloads are not necessarily the best indicator of quality.
