Online retail reaches ?4.8 billion

UK web sales boosted by 11.3 per cent

Online spending in the UK surpassed £4.8 billion in July, driven by poor weather throughout the month, according to the Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

Overall, e-retail saw a sales growth of 11.3 per cent. This was in stark contrast to high street sales, which were down by 0.9 per cent.

The electrical sector made its highest gains of the year in July, it is speculated that sales were driven by the release of the iPhone 3G and demand for flat screen televisions in anticipation of the Olympics.

“Gloomy market conditions have not dampened consumers' appetite for shopping online. Online sales continue to show strong growth, particularly when compared to the tough trading conditions on the high street,” said Mike Petevinos, head of consulting at Capgemini. “Even the electrical sector, which is highly susceptible to falling consumer confidence, is seeing good growth driven by the increased choice, price transparency and convenience that online has to offer.”
