Having started out as a campaign on Kickstarter back in 2012, the Oculus Rift has finally been given a release date.

On the Oculus VR blog, its makers stated: “Today, we’re incredibly excited to announce that the Oculus Rift will be shipping to consumers in Q1 2016, with pre-orders later this year.”

The makers also revealed that the device has an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, plus updated ergonomics for a more natural fit.

In the next few weeks, more details will be revealed according to the blog, around the Rift’s hardware, software and unannounced games that have been designed for the VR headset.

The makers added on the blog: "Virtual reality is going to transform gaming, film, entertainment, communication, and much more."

This news comes after Facebook bought Oculus in a deal worth $2 million last year. However, the company revealed it had no plans for shipment any time soon.
