British mobile network O2 has signed a deal with Nokia Siemens Networks to provide upgrades to the 3G network over the next three years.

The deal will see Nokia Siemens Networks provide the telco equipment provider's Flexi Multiradio Base Station, Radio Network Controller and its NetAct network management system.

"Smartphone users want to stay connected to the network all the time, and are increasingly demanding high-speed data services," said O2 UK CTO Nigel Purdy.

The new equipment is expected to provide the majority of O2's 3G network and will improve coverage, customer capacity and broadband speeds throughout the South of England.

The Nokia Siemen's equipment is aso upgradable to the next-generation 4G LTE mobile standard which is expected to appear by 2014.
