Nvidia has updated its GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with a 3GB model.
Thanks to an image from Videocardz, we can see that Nvidia has announced the existence of a smaller sibling to the pre-existing 6GB model. The presentation slide shows that the two cards actually differ a lot more than many had previously thought.
The 3GB variant – built on the same Pascal architecture as the rest of the 10 series – has one SM module disabled, giving it a 128 fewer CUDA cores than the currently released 6GB model. Aside from memory and CUDA cores, the other specifications seem to be the same. The 3GB variant will still feature a 120W TDP, require a 6-PIN PCIe power connector, and feature a 1.7GHz GPU core clock. The card also features 1x HDMI 2.0b, 1x DL-DVI and 3x DisplayPort 1.4
While this move has been seen by many as a positive attempt by Nvidia to create an entry level card to truly rival the AMD Radeon RX-480, 470 and 460, some have been critical, calling the naming of the card disingenuous.
Critics have argued that the card is considerably less powerful than the 6GB 1060, as it could lead consumers to believe that the two cards offer similar performance when there is a large gap between it and the 3GB model.
