The departure of Anssi Vanjoki, currently EVP of Nokia's Mobile Solutions unit and a member of the group executive board, comes just one working day after Nokia appointed Stephen Elop from Microsoft as its new CEO.

He replaced the longstanding incumbent Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who will leave the company on September 20th.

What drama, just a day before Nokia rolls into London for Nokia World 2010.

Vanjoki has been with Nokia since 1991, and has been instrumental in some of the firm's biggest successes.

In the fevered speculation around the position of Kallasvuo over the last few months, Vanjoki was frequently touted as a possible successor.

He is one of the firm's most visible and energetic senior execs. But it looks as if his inextricable connection to the regime of recent years, and the collapse in fortune of the smartphone division may have nobbled his chances.
