A lesson for all social media marketers: be careful how you use Wayne Rooney

Nike fails to overturn Twitter marketing complaint

Sports brand Nike ran afoul of the Advertising Standards Authority when it used England stars including Wayne Rooney to talk about its Make it Count campaign back in June. Now an independent review has decided that the ASA was correct to ban the promoted tweets.

Rooney had Tweeted back in January: “My resolution – to start the year as a champion, and finish it as a champion …#makeitcount.gonike.me/makeitcount”

The ASA said it wasn’t clear enough that it was a marketing campaign, whilst Nike argued that few people would be misled.

Unfortunately for Nike and other brands planning similar campaigns, the independent review panel has said there were no flaws in the judgement process.

Be careful what you Tweet out there…
