Google has revealed that the firm's debut 'Google phone', the Nexus One, will not be receiving an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Nexus One is less than two years old but owners will be left out in the cold when it comes to the new OS. At least as far as an official version is concerned. It's virtually inevitable that enthusiasts will create a third party port following the release of the source code.

The Nexus range of smartphones are bootloader unlocked enabling easy switching to third party firmware such as the CyanogenMod range of modified Android firmware.

The more recent Samsung-made Nexus S will be receiving an over the air upgrade within weeks after the release of the Galaxy Nexus, the first phone to arrive with Google's latest Android OS.
