Version 5 of Apple’s Safari browser software was revealed at the Worldwide Developer Conference yesterday.

The latest release uses Apple’s new Nitro JavaScript Engine, which runs JavaScript 30 per cent faster than Safari 4, and DNS prefetching, which reduces page load time. It will also feature secure extensions, allowing developers to create extensions that run independently of the browser process.

Apple has created a free Safari Developer Program to allow developers to write these plug-ins in HTML 5, CSS or JavaScript, and the browser includes a tool called Extension Builder.

As well as these performance and security enhancements, Safari 5 also includes an integrated Reader, allowing people to view text in an ad free, scrollable format. In addition, the URL bar has been tweaked to offer more versatility in URL recognition.
